The Situation We’re In

The United Methodist Church is unraveling. Early in 2020 an agreement for an amicable denominational separation had been proposed due to longstanding irreconcilable differences in the areas of theology, sexuality and gender identity, qualifications for ordination, and the ongoing mission of the church. The General Conference of May 2020 was expected to approve a plan of separation, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other concerns, that conference has been postponed three times and is now expected to take place in 2024. In the meantime, entire annual conferences and jurisdictions in the United States have declared they will not abide by the Book of Discipline’s traditional standards on marriage, ordination, and LGBTQIA+ concerns. Leaders championing a progressive theological stance have now withdrawn their support for the separation protocol. The Wesleyan Covenant Association has been instrumental in the launching of the new, theologically traditional Global Methodist Church. Many individual congregations have undertaken a process of disaffiliation from the United Methodist Church to become part of the Global Methodist Church. Many other UM congregations are awaiting developments of the anticipated 2024 General Conference. Still others have determined to remain a voice for traditional theological commitments within the continuing United Methodist Church. And, sadly, many have become “wandering Methodists” looking for a new church home entirely. The Northern Illinois Wesleyan Covenant Association seeks to provide information, resources, counsel, and referrals for UM congregations attempting to navigate these unprecedented times.
